Rebecca at the Well

Rebecca at the Well POUSSIN (1594-1665)

See for the source of the above photograph of the painting and notes.  Although a Frenchman, Poussin spent most of his painting career in Rome.  He is known for his painting on both religious and Greco-Roman subjects.  You see the latter influence in this painting of the scene from Genesis 24:12-38 when Abraham sends his servant to his old country, Ur, to find a wife for Isaac, since the Canaaninte women weren’t fit for him.  Poussin inserts the rural scene in a setting of Classic Antiquity.
